A quick question from a newb

From: (chadm6@yahoo.com) | Date: 2004-09-12 22:23:41 UTC
I am new to letterboxing and have found several in the eastern
Wisconsin area already. I was wondering is it customary to contact
the box owners after you find their box and let them know it's still
there and ok or doesnt it matter? Just wondering

Hi and Welcome!
I am thrilled when people take the time to send me a quick Email after finding one of my boxes. Whether it be an update on the condition of the box, or comments (good or bad)... I love to hear back from people. I always try to contact the placer myself, after finding their box. Just makes sense. So, in my opinion, yes it matters!
Blessings, MayEve

I don't think that it's a practice that's carved in stone. but I get
the impression that people like to do it anyway. Especially, if it
was a challenging box to find. You would definately want to make
contact if the box is missing or damaged. Also, you might want to
critique the clues and give the placer some suggestions to better
describe landmarks.

As a surveyor and former forester who has spent much of my
professional life searching for things in the woods, I quickly became
aware that many of the placers don't know how to properly describe
things. Another thing that people aren't aware of is how fast things
change in a natural environment. You'd be surprised how fast a
fallen log or a stump becomes a pile of duff.

Being new to boxing myself and just having recently planted 2 in the Green Bay area, I would LOVE for people to email me when they find my boxes. Not only would I be interested in hearing the status of my box, but if they enjoyed the area, the clues, etc. Our F count is at 19 and I've emailed almost all the placers to let them know the status, and most all of them have responded saying they really appreciated hearing from me.

Welcome to boxing in Wisconsin! (and beyond!!!)

I don't think that a quick e-mail to let the placer
know their box is alive and kicking is out of line ...
I love hearing from people who have found mine, and
that they're OK.

Of course, if you find a box that needs attention, you
should definately contact the owner to let them know
ASAP

Enjoy your letterboxing adventure!
